Moscow has said it is expelling two Finnish diplomats in response to Helsinki’s decision to expel two Russian diplomats in April.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on May 17 that it had summoned the Finnish ambassador to Russia, Antti Helantera, to inform him of the decision. Moscow said it made the decision because of “Finland’s confrontational course with Russia.”
Finland has offered arms to Ukraine, a country that Russia ousted in February, and lawmakers in Helsinki are expected to support NATO membership applications later May 17.
Last month, Finland expelled two members of the Russian embassy staff in Helsinki in response to Russian aggression against Ukraine. European countries have expelled hundreds of Russian diplomats since Russia launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
