Russia has asked China for military equipment as it appears to be in trouble with armaments during its slow advance into Ukraine, US officials say.
There are no details yet on the types of weapons that have been requested, and it is not known whether Beijing has really set in motion to supply Vladimir Putin’s government – but the request itself has raised great concern among Western governments. The Financial Times first reported that the US was informing its allies that China could prepare to help Russia. U.S. officials, who also preferred not to be identified, said there were signs that Russia was running out of weapons, at a time when the war is only in its third week.
Moscow, which calls its intervention in Ukraine a ‘special operation’ rather than an invasion or war, has strengthened co-operation with Xi Jinping’s communist government as the two countries come under strong Western pressure on human rights and a number of other issues. “China is deeply concerned about the situation in Ukraine,” said Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, adding that “China is deeply concerned about the situation in Ukraine.” he was unaware of any information that his country might be willing to help Russia.
“We sincerely hope that the situation will calm down and peace will return soon,” he said. A meeting between US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan in Rome with Chinese chief diplomat Yang Jiechi is expected soon. Sullivan has openly warned China to avoid aid to Russia that would allow it to ease global sanctions that have hit the Russian economy. “We will not allow such a thing,” he said, “otherwise China must also take into account the consequences of its action.”
