Russia’s Defense Ministry has announced a ceasefire in the besieged city of Mariupol in Ukraine, starting Thursday morning, to allow the evacuation of civilians.
“For this humanitarian operation to be successful, we propose that it be carried out with the direct participation of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Committee of the Red Cross,” the ministry said in a statement quoted by AFP on Wednesday.
The humanitarian corridor from Mariupol to Zaporizhia – through the Russian-controlled city of Berdiansk – will open on Thursday morning.
Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on this announcement.
Previous attempts to establish a ceasefire in Mariupol have failed, amid allegations of attacks by both sides.
Russia has also been accused of forcibly relocating thousands of civilians to Russia or to Russian-controlled areas.
The announcement comes after new satellite photos showed the devastation caused by the shelling.
Images published by the Maxar Earth observation company showed that the inhabited areas have been turned into ruins. These images have highlighted Russian artillery cannons in firing positions on the outskirts of the city.
