The Kremlin said Friday that the European Union’s decision to grant candidate status to Ukraine, where Russia is waging a military campaign, is entirely “an internal matter” of the union.
“These are, of course, internal European issues,” Peskov told reporters at a news conference. “It is essential for us that all these processes do not bring more problems to us and in the relations of the above-mentioned countries with us. “And that does not lead to a further deterioration of our relations with the EU.”
Also on Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the European perspective of Ukraine and Moldova did not pose a “threat” to Russia, as he said the EU is not a military alliance.
However, he accused the EU and NATO of assembling a “coalition” to prepare for war with Russia, comparing them to the Nazi alliance of World War II.
“Hitler under his banner had united a large number of European countries to fight against the Soviet Union,” Lavrov said during a working visit to Azerbaijan.
“Today the EU and NATO are joining such a coalition to wage war against Russia.”
Russia’s relations with the West have been at an all-time low since President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine, sparking a barrage of sanctions against Moscow.
EU leaders on Thursday granted candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, but said Georgia, which also applied for membership, could only receive the status after the outstanding issues are addressed.
