At a press conference with his German counterpart in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he does not accept requests for military operations on Russian territory.
Last month Moscow made several demands to NATO and the US to reduce their influence in the countries of the former Soviet Union. The demands are at the center of negotiations between Russia and representatives of the US, NATO, and OSCE following concerns about a possible plan to invade Ukraine by Russia.
Moscow has refused to sit down in new talks on Ukraine if the West does not respond to the demands. Thousands of Russian troops are reportedly stationed near the border with Ukraine as the West accuses Moscow of preparing an attack.
Russia denies the allegations but insists its demands, particularly on suspending Ukraine’s NATO membership. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said there would be no further negotiations if the West did not provide a concrete answer. “We are now waiting for a response to the proposals, as promised, in order to continue the negotiations,” he told a news conference with German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock.
“Let’s hope the talks continue,” Lavrov added.
