Following public outrage, the mayor of Rotterdam today refused to confirm the cutting of a historic bridge over the city to allow the new $ 400 million yacht of American tycoon Jeff Bezos to cross the river.
Reports this week said the city had agreed to dismantle the Koningshaven bridge, sparking widespread public outrage in the country.
On some Facebook pages, locals proposed massively shooting the yacht with eggs as it passed through the bridge built in 1927 – which blocks the exit of the new ship offshore.
Today the spokesperson of the mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said that although the permission for temporary dismantling of the bridge has been requested from the construction site, no decision has been taken or given for the issue.
A Rotterdam city spokeswoman said reports of the bridge being dismantled to allow the Amazon owner’s boat to pass were false.
They added that if Bezos asks for a favor, the city will consider it.
Earlier reports said the Amazon owner’s 60-foot-long, three-mast yacht had to cross the historic bridge and the bill would be paid by Bezos.
The superboat is still under construction at the Oceano plant in the west of the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, several thousand residents had expressed interest in an event on social networks where the egg attack on the yacht was proposed as it passed through the historic bridge.
The three mega-yacht masts are estimated to be higher than 45 meters which currently allows crossing under the bridge.
After the last renovation of the bridge in 2017, the local council vowed that it would never be dismantled again.
The green bridge has two tall towers connected to another bridge.
She was injured heavy in 1940 during the bombing of Rotterdam, and is already a protected monument of the city.
