Romania reported today a new record number of new coronavirus infections, about 35,000, almost twice as many as the day before. In the past month, Romania has seen a sharp increase in the number of new infections, from around 1,000 in mid-December to 34,225 today.
The number of deaths due to the infection has started to increase and in the previous 24 hours the authorities reported 94, the most in the last month.
Unvaccinated make up three-quarters of deaths in the last 24 hours, as well as more than 80 per cent of 692 patients with COVID-19 in intensive care units in Romanian hospitals.
Romania, which has reported about 60,000 deaths from COVID since the pandemic began, has the second lowest vaccination rate in the EU, with only 41% fully immunized, while the Union average is 70%.
Health officials have predicted a sharp increase in the number of infections due to the rapid spread of the omicron type. Despite the large number of coronavirus infections, Romania has significantly fewer hospitalizations and deaths compared to the previous wave, which led to a strain on the health system last fall.
