Ukrainian officials announced that the Russian air force destroyed a school and a residential building in Kharkiv early Monday morning, killing at least three people and injuring 28 others.
Kharkiv is the second largest city of the country.
In a post on the “Telegram” social network, the governor of the region, Oleh Syneihubov, wrote that the rocket attacks, including one that fell near some storage buildings, were aimed at civilians. He called the attacks “pure terrorism”.
The developments come as searches continue in the eastern town of Chasiv Yar for survivors after a rocket attack on a five-story residential building on Saturday killed at least 15 people.
Authorities say that more than 20 people may be trapped under the rubble and that they were able to hear and contact some of them.
Chasiv Yar lies about 20 kilometers southeast of Kramatorsk, a city expected to be a key target for Russian forces as they try to advance further west into Donetsk province. A week ago, Moscow claimed to have taken control of neighboring Luhansk province.
The Chasiv Yar attack is the latest to cause a large number of civilian casualties, but Russia continues to claim that it is only targeting military targets.
At least 19 people were killed in an attack at the end of June on a shopping center in Kremenchuk, while another 21 were killed this month in another attack on an apartment block and entertainment area in the southern Odesa region.
