Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss will go head-to-head in the Conservative Party leader race after Penny Mordaund was the last candidate to be eliminated.
In the fifth round of voting by conservative MPs, the leadership contenders received the following support:
• Penny Mordaunt – 105
• Rishi Sunak – 137
• Liz Truss – 113
The former chancellor and foreign secretary finished in the top two after five rounds of voting by Conservative MPs.
Mordaund came second in all previous rounds of voting, while in the last round he took first place.
The race pits Sunak, former head of the British Treasury, who has led Britain’s economy throughout the coronavirus pandemic, against Truss, who, in the position of Foreign Minister, has been in charge of the British attitude towards the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Both contenders will campaign in the coming weeks to win over the Conservative Party’s roughly 180,000 eligible voters. The winner of the elections will be announced on September 5, and whoever takes the leadership of the party automatically takes the position of prime minister. Johnson, who resigned on July 7 after several months of ethical scandals, continues to be at the head of the British Government until his successor is chosen.
