Russia’s state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported that Russia had banned the entry of 63 Japanese nationals, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, indefinitely.
CNN reports that Kishida’s cabinet members, including Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi and Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki, have also been barred from entering Russia, as well as members of parliament and the military.
“The Fumio Kishida administration has launched an unprecedented anti-Russian campaign, allowing unacceptable rhetoric against the Russian Federation, including slander and direct threats.“, Said the Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement, according to RIA.
Since March, Japan has imposed a series of sanctions against Russia, including the freezing of assets of President Vladimir Putin and members of his family in response to the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
Last week, Russia warned Japan of “retaliatory measures” if it expanded joint naval exercises with the United States near Russia’s eastern border.
