Šefik Džaferović: Honorable President of the Assembly, honorable deputies of the Republic of Albania, ladies and gentlemen, dear friends. In the following days, it will be exactly 27 years since the genocide in Srebrenica, the biggest mass crime on European soil after the Second World War.
In just a few days, after July 11, 1995, units of the Republika Srpska Army and Police killed more than 8,000 men and boys. As stated in the judgments of the Hague Tribunal, the entire operation was carried out under the orders and supervision of the political and military leadership of Republika Srpska. The action of that tidal industry of death disturbed the conscience of humanity and pointed out the catastrophic consequences of the international community, which passively, for three years, observed the siege of Srebrenica “the safe zone of the United Nations”. The tragedy in Srebrenica has become a global symbol of suffering and crime in the modern era.
Even today, 27 years later, the word our Srebrenica with the most powerful horror and pain. With gratitude and appreciation I received the news about the intention of the Assembly of Albania to approve the Resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica. I thank all the deputies who supported the adoption of this resolution. With this act, Albania confirms its belonging to the civilized world and the Assembly of Albania joins the EP, the American Congress and more parliaments in the world, Europe and the region that approved the resolution. This is a very essential and very important act for the entire region and the Western Balkans. Restoring trust in the region is only possible with respect for the truth, because respect for the truth is respect for the victims.
I hope that one day everyone in the Western Balkan region, without exception, will start respecting the victims by accepting the truth. It is up to them to do this and ensure a normal and healthy future, or they will continue to deny, thereby preventing the return of faith and holding new generations hostage to the past. The Republic of Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina are two close and extremely friendly countries. Our countries contribute to the creation of a peaceful and democratic environment in the region. Our peoples are connected by numerous historical, cultural and generally human ties. Our future is common and it is European and Euro-Atlantic. In this perspective, I see this act of the Assembly of Albania. The purpose of remembering and honoring the victims is to ensure that the horror of genocide never happens again. As Potoçari’s prayer says: Let pain be hope, instead of revenge let justice be. Let the tears of the mother be a prayer that Srebrenica never happens to anyone again.
