The remains of a mega predator, belonging to the dinosaur family, 9 and 10 meters long and that lived 70 million years ago, were found in southern Argentina, two of the paleontologists who participated in the discovery told AFP.
Fernando Novas, one of the pantheologists, gave details of the discovery:It was a large animal, and apparently from the measurements we took and comparisons, it would be one of the largest predators ever documented. It is also one of the last predators that inhabited the planet before the extinction of the dinosaurs, about 66 million years ago.
Novas was the one who in 1996 discovered the first predator in the Argentine province of Neuquén, also in Patagonia, but about 1400 kilometers north of the current find. Others were later found in Australia, Thailand and Japan.
Fossils of this carnivorous dinosaur with 40-centimeter claws were found in March 2019 during an expedition south of the Patagonian province of Santa Cruz, in an area known as Estancia La Anita, 30 kilometers south of the resort town of El Calafate and near the glacier of famous Perito Moreno.
A little over three years later, after the painstaking work of extraction, transportation in Buenos Aires, cleaning and laboratory research that was not interrupted even by the Covid-19 pandemic, the discovery of “Maip macrothorax” has just been published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature.
