More than a year after the release of Covid-19 vaccines, new cases of infections in the United States have set a new record with a daily average of 265,000 cases, largely due to the highly transmissible Omicron variant.
New daily cases have doubled in the last two weeks. The previous record was in January this year with 250 thousand cases per day.
The number of Americans hospitalized is about 60,000, or half the January figures. The condition in hospitals may be a reflection of the impact of vaccines, as well as the possibility that the Omicron variant is not associated with severe symptoms.
Deaths have risen over the past two weeks, from 1,200 to 1,500 a day.
The data show that hospitalizations are more numerous among the unvaccinated. Hospitalization is not expected to reach the high levels of the past, says Amesh Adalja, a public health expert at Johns Hopkins University.
Vaccines and other treatments have helped reduce the number of infections and minimize severe cases. “It will take time to get used to the fact that the number of cases today no longer has the same meaning as in the past,” says Mr. Adalja.
The same serious situation is being observed in Europe. Some countries like France, Greece, Britain and Spain have recorded record levels of infections this week.
