Leaders from dozens of countries and international organizations have gathered in Lugano, Switzerland with the goal of creating a plan to rebuild Ukraine after the war.
The reconstruction effort has been compared to the US-led Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe after World War II.
Under the name of the Conference of the Recovery of Ukraine, internationals aim to coordinate efforts to help the country in the war even more.
Rebuilding Ukraine is a “joint task,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told leaders at the conference
“The reconstruction of Ukraine is not a local project. It is not a project of one nation, but a common task of the entire democratic world, of all countries that say they are civilized,” Zelensky said.
“The task before us is colossal, as President Zelensky said. This is why the European Commission has proposed to the Ukrainian government to create a reconstruction platform to map investment needs, coordinate actions, channelize resources, and of course in support of an ambitious reform agenda. “Von der Leyen said
According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the plan for Ukraine’s recovery will cost $750 billion, while Russia’s invasion has caused $100 billion in direct infrastructure damage, he said.
The two-day conference, held under tight security in the picturesque southern Swiss city, was planned well in advance of Russia’s February 24 invasion.
Initially, it was planned to discuss reforms in Ukraine, but the war redefined the topic of discussion, to focus now on the reconstruction of the country.
