Ukraine is gathering a force of one million people equipped with Western weapons to retake the south of the country, the Ukrainian Defense Minister has said.
Oleksii Reznikov told The Times that the new order came from above, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to retake occupied coastal areas that are vital to Ukraine’s economy.
“We understand that politically it is very necessary for our country. The president has ordered the supreme military chief to draw up plans. After that the general staff is doing their homework and they say to achieve this goal we need XYZ”said Reznikov.
“This is my job. I’m writing letters to counterparts in partner countries, the generals talk about why we need this kind of weaponry, and then we make the political decisions.”
He praised the help of Western counterparts, especially British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, in helping to replenish and upgrade Ukraine’s weaponry.
