Although at a slower pace than in the previous two years, the Covid-19 pandemic continued to take human lives in the first quarter of this year.
INSTAT reported that in January-March 2022, a total of 7,938 deaths were recorded in the country. Compared to the same period a year ago, when the pandemic peaked and the highest record death rate in Albanian history was recorded, the number is 22.3% lower.
But, compared to the average 2016-2019 of January-March, when the country was in the normal period, fatalities have increased by 25.3%, an indicator that the pandemic continues to kill, but also the consequences it has left on the population that has passed Covid-19, accelerating fatal cases. Since April 2020, when the pandemic started, 16.2 thousand additional deaths have been recorded in the country, compared to the average of 2016-2019, when it was a normal period, according to INSTAT data, processed by Monitor. Compared to the official deaths reported by COvid-19 by the Ministry of Health as of March 31, 2022, which were 3,492 in total, the additional fatalities are 4.7 higher. Under-declaration in Albania is higher than the global average, where according to the WHO deaths in the world are almost 3 times higher than declarations.
14.6 thousand additional fatalities were registered only for the period 2020-2021, according to INSTAT data and 1,603 additional life losses were in the first quarter of this year.
For the whole of 2021, the country recorded a total of about 30.6 thousand (30,580) loss of life, marking the highest record level ever achieved in the history of the country. This is the second year in a row, when fatalities in the country are proving high. In the first year of the pandemic, in 2020, a total of 27.6 thousand fatalities were registered, from 21.8 thousand which was the average of the period 2016-2019.
Compared to the 2016-2019 average, when it was a normal period, deaths in 2021 have increased by 40%. Even in 2020, additional mortality compared to the 2016-2019 average increased by about 26%.
The most fatal quarter, since the beginning of the pandemic was January-March 2021, when 10.2 thousand loss of life were registered, with an increase of 61% compared to the average of the same period 2016-2019.
It is followed by the fourth quarter of 2020, with almost 9.4 thousand fatalities, with an increase of 42% compared to the relevant average 2016-2019. (see graph: Deaths by quarters in the pandemic 2020-2021, compared to the average 2016-2019)
