After France with more than 149,000 cases and Italy with 112,000, the Czech Republic is the European country that has registered the largest number of COVID-19 infections (82,000) as of February 28, seven days that have marked an increase in strong outbreaks across Central and Eastern Europe, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) epidemiological balance sheet.
The Czech Republic has one of the highest infection rates in the world and has crossed the threshold of 20,000 deaths since the beginning of the epidemic.
This week Prague returned to Russia to verify the possibility of receiving the Spoutnik V vaccine.
“Vaccines have no ideology,” said Czech President Milos Zeman, who added that the Czech Republic would also accept Chinese Sinopharm, while EU-approved vaccines are being administered slowly.
After Hungary, other Central and Eastern European countries, such as Austria and Slovakia, are now moving in the same direction, with the latter receiving the first doses from Moscow.
According to the WHO weekly bulletin, another 432,726 cases of coronavirus (+ 26.3% compared to last week) and 9,351 new deaths (-0.8%) were reported from Balkan and Central-Eastern European countries in week to February 28 bringing the total number of cases since the outbreak in the region to 11,354,204.
