Police in Melrose, Massachusetts said the elderly driver, who had just bought a car and was practicing driving, lost control of the Range Rover and crashed into eight tombstones, repeatedly stepping on the gas instead of the brakes.
Officials said the woman had never learned to drive and admitted that “perhaps they should not have given her the license.
Officers arrived at the scene following reports of the incident and found a row of stones dropped Sunday in Wyoming Cemetery, USA.
Police Chief David Mackey said the 53-year-old woman had mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal that had made her push forward the gravestones.
“She is a middle-aged woman who has never learned to drive a car. “Maybe they should not have given him the patent, but you have nothing to do with it, accidents happen.”
Mackey added: “We are not dealing with crime, it is just an unfortunate accident with significant damage.”
The unidentified driver had a relative in the car with him, police said, adding that her vehicle then had to be towed by special vehicles.
The tombstones had been restored to their places by the public works office, the network reported FOX2.
Police said they are still investigating the incident.
