Prime Minister Edi Rama has responded to the US Ambassador to Tirana, Yur Kim, who reacted to his comments to SPAK in the SP Assembly.
He said that no one can give lectures on justice in the country, neither Albanians nor internationals, as the government makes reforms related to justice.
“I will not go to justice without seeing action. The prime minister is not a prosecutor, he is not a judge, I only do reforms. No one can give me lessons in interfering in justice, neither in English nor in French. We are not here to play the role of a fool when you see something that Muu does and the citizens tell us that you betrayed us…“, Said Rama.
In direct language, US Ambassador Yuri Kim on Monday called for a policy stay away from interfering in the affairs of the SPAK.
“I have been living in Albania for years and I believe you know that I am clear on the point that I speak bluntly, maybe sometimes not diplomatically. So let me once again be clear maybe even non-diplomatic. What is justice, what is the purpose of the reform? What will Albania look like when the reform is implemented, according to the norms and practices of your US friends, but also your future family, the EU.
We will know that justice reform has been successful when it is no longer considered normal to have judges and prosecutors engaged in misconduct.
That is why we have the Vetting institutions, they will be considered successful when we do not think it is appropriate for the ruling political leaders or not, to call this or that prosecutor, to say, justice is served only when the other ends up in prison. Justice is not given when my side goes to jail, this is not justice, these are not the standards we are looking for you to achieve. There are no standards that people demand.
Blind-eyed justice is required, that law and justice apply equally to all. Prosecutors need to take action because the law requires it, so I urge you to keep this in mind as we implement justice reform. We can not continue with the so-called justice of the past, the justice that should come to Albania as a NATO ally as a friend of the US, is the justice that has standards, in line with the EU and that people expect.
The EU demands are clear, the US actions also during the last 31 years make it clear that the US support for democracy in Albania is stronger than ever, the expectations of the people are just as clear and I urge you to act so as not to disappoint. It is time to move forward, to create a justice that is blind, but also justSaid Kim.
Recall that the US Embassy is a constant supporter of this special prosecutor’s office.
The Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime on Saturday received strong criticism from Prime Minister Edi Rama, implying that this structure is close to the failure of its mission.
