Prime Minister Edi Rama, who is on an official visit to the United States, was received this Wednesday by the leaders of Georgetown University.
Thanks to Albania for helping the Afghan citizens who fled after Afghanistan was invaded by the Taliban, the Prime Minister responded with the promise that “Albanians will help people in need, because this is the legacy left to us by our ancestors:
“Every time I hear such good words, I have a feeling of embarrassment, because what is so special should be the norm for everyone. Albania, such a small country is praised so much, as other much larger countries, distanced themselves from aid to Afghanistan and beyond.
I’m glad we were able to help as many Afghans as we could, just as they helped us when we were ‘Afghans’ when we left the country in search of a better future”.
To emphasize religious tolerance in our country, Rama told the story of his family:
“I am Catholic, my wife is Muslim, our two children from previous marriages are Orthodox, we have a little one who can decide to become a Jew. I bring this example, because I think that this is the most beautiful heritage that Albania has, that we should celebrate and make sure that our children walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, who welcomed the Jews and made Albania the only country that had more more Jews after the war than before it ”.
