Emergency workers today pulled the body of another victim from the wreckage of a train that derailed yesterday in southern Germany, bringing the death toll to five.
Employees continued today searching for survivors after the rare disaster in the picturesque Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain region in Bavaria.
The regional train was traveling from the Alpine ski resort to Munich when it derailed and at least three carriages overturned.
Authorities say five people have been confirmed dead and 44 injured, including three passengers with serious injuries.
A police spokesman said the major operation to free those trapped from the rubble had already been completed.
Today Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said there may still be bodies trapped in the rubble as there are still some people whose whereabouts are unknown.
About 140 people were on board the train when the tragedy occurred.
After several failed attempts, the trains managed today to lift at least one of the wagons that had derailed. Prosecutors are investigating the causes of the accident. National and regional politicians have visited the scene to express their shock.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was shocked by the news and images of the accident.
Bavaria’s Regional Prime Minister Markus Söder said today during his visit that it was “something incomprehensible that is happening”.
“We hope we do not have more deaths,” he said, among other things.
