Thousands of citizens gathered in Skopje on Thursday, for the sixth day in a row, to protest against a proposal by France, which aims to resolve some differences between Skopje and Sofia, in order to pave the way for further European integration. of North Macedonia.
Macedonian opposition parties, which are organizing the protests, say the proposal puts Macedonian identity at risk, while the government, which has accepted it, says it preserves the Macedonian language and history.
Unlike the past few days, when protests escalated into violence, Thursday’s gatherings were peaceful.
The leader of the Macedonian opposition party, Hristian Mickoski, addressed the protesters, saying that they should not allow themselves to fall “prey to provocations”.
“Let’s say a big ‘no’ to all those who try to contaminate this nationwide protest. Strength is not violence, strength is massiveness,” he said.
A day earlier, Mickoski said that a protester, who fired a gun, “tried to kill him”, but he has not brought any evidence for his claims.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of North Macedonia later confirmed that it had arrested a person, but did not provide more details.
On Thursday, the Government of North Macedonia reviewed France’s proposal and decided to pass it to the Assembly for approval.
The Assembly does not provide information on when the debate about it will be able to take place.
The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, in a letter addressed to the citizens of North Macedonia on Thursday, said that the French proposal is not perfect, but it brings the country into the EU. Radio Free Europe
