The Macedonian parliament meets again today to discuss for the third day in a row the French proposal, which is claimed to pave the way for negotiations with the EU, but has encountered great opposition in the neighboring country.
The opposition MPs again expressed their revolt against the proposal, whistling and shouting. The situation became tense when Dimitar Apasiev of the Left Party, initially almost fought with the deputy of SDSM, Martin Kostovski. Other lawmakers had to intervene so that the situation did not degenerate into a physical clash.
Apasiev then turned to Speaker Talat Xhaferri, who closed the microphone. In the moments of verbal confrontation, Xhaferi addressed him saying: “Don’t point that finger at me, because that finger can break”! Apasiev called on the Albanian MPs not to support the French proposal because according to him, Pandora’s box will be opened and then the Albanians will not have the moral right to complain. He added that with the approval of this proposal, the inter-ethnic lines will come to the fore, because this way, he said, the Albanian parties are proving that they are against the interests of the Macedonian people.
On Thursday, lawmakers concluded they would not vote for or against the proposal as a whole. Instead, they will decide on a series of conclusions which will be adopted throughout the debate. While, in theory, the proposal in any form should pass due to the majority of the ruling party, there could be further problems ahead. This is because in order to change the constitution as required by the French proposal with the aim of integrating the Bulgarians there, there would have to be a two-thirds majority, which currently cannot be achieved.
