Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow was ready to take “military-technical” measures in response to what he described as “unfriendly” actions by the West over the conflict in Ukraine.
For weeks, the Russian president has accused the United States and NATO of fomenting tensions near Russia’s borders, but these are the first statements that openly hint at a possible conflict.
“If this obviously aggressive attitude of our Western colleagues continues, we will take appropriate military-technical measures. Russia will react harshly to unfriendly steps. We all have the right to do so”.
Since mid-November, the United States has raised the alarm that Moscow may be preparing a large-scale attack on Ukraine and has warned Putin that if that happened, Moscow would face unprecedented sanctions.
Western governments have accused Moscow of amassing more than 100,000 troops near the eastern border with Ukraine, where Kiev has been fighting pro-Russian separatists since 2014.
Russia, for its part, denies plans to invade the neighboring country, and demands assurances from the US and NATO that the alliance will not expand eastward.
