Germany and France made another attempt to bring President Putin back to the negotiating table and reach a ceasefire in Ukraine, while President Zelensky calls Russia a state of terror.
Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz spoke with Putin by telephone for 80 minutes and insisted on an immediate ceasefire and a withdrawal of Russian troops.
The Russian leader said Moscow was open to resuming dialogue with Kiev, according to the Kremlin, but did not mention the possibility of direct talks between Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Ukrainian president had earlier said he was not “eager” for talks, but added that they would likely be needed to end the conflict.
“I will remind the world again and again that it is necessary to finally officially recognize Russia as a terrorist state, a state sponsor of terrorism. Terror in Ukraine. Terror in the energy market of Europe, not only in our country. Terror in the food market and on a global scale. “Only together, only we all Europeans will be able to stop such a policy of such a state.” said Zelensky.
On the other hand, the Russian president has warned Germany about sending more weapons to Ukraine. He told Scholz and Macron that sending other weapons was “dangerous”.
According to him, there is a danger that in Ukraine “the situation will be further destabilized and the humanitarian crisis will intensify.” Putin again demanded the lifting of sanctions in exchange for grain exports.
Meanwhile on the ground, the Russian military is trying to encircle Ukrainian forces in the city of Luhansk, Severodonetsk, the last major Ukrainian stronghold in the region.
