Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on foreign volunteers to fight Ukrainian forces.
Speaking at a meeting of the Russian Security Council, he said those who wanted to volunteer to fight with Russian-backed forces should be allowed, according to the BBC.
The BBC reported that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu added that there were 16,000 volunteers in the Middle East ready to fight alongside Russian-backed forces.
US officials said these could include combat-ready Syrians, as Moscow is a longtime ally of Syria and Putin has been a key supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s civil war.
“If you see that there are people who want to come to the aid of the people living in Donbas with their desire, not for money, then we have to give them what they want and help them get to the area. “of the conflict,” Putin told the defense minister, according to the BBC.
The Russia-Ukraine war has caused many casualties, where so far according to the Ukrainian side there are over 11 thousand Russian soldiers killed.
