Russian President Vladimir Putin is also trying to win the information war on the attack in Ukraine by recruiting a series of photogenic spokespersons.
The British media wrote today that Putin has also deployed the “lipstick army” to divert attention from bombs and war victims.
Among them is the head of information at the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, who called the bombing of the maternity hospital in Mariupol last week “information terrorism”.
Speaking at the conference with brilliant lipstick, she dismissed Ukrainian reports saying the airstrikes were fake.
Earlier, Zakarova reported that 26 US-funded biological weapons laboratories had been discovered in Ukraine, which have become the most watched videos on social networks.
Zakharova has been included in the EU sanctions list, along with Margarita Simonyan, a journalist who claimed that the attacks in Salisbury with nerve agent Novichok were false.
Another propagandist is former spy Maria Butina who already serves in the Russian parliament. Last week she said in an interview with the BBC that “Ukrainians are bombing themselves”.
British government communications spokeswoman Jo Tanner, a former adviser to Boris Johnson, said she understood the logic of placing women in such roles.
“In this way the sharp corners of the issues are smoothed,” she said.
“These spokesmen play with the fact that people do not have many sources of information. “The whole Russian occupation is based on a lie and is fueled by the continuation of the lie.”
Tanner adds: “People hope that these people are lying and do not know the truth when they give it, but there is a lot of doubt about that.”
Mark Galeotti, a British specialist in Russia, said Putin said that male officials in gray suits did not know how to convey their message well, and that those like the Zakharova type received public coverage.
“With their role, these women are more famous outside Russia than in their own country.”
“They do not need what they really have in their hearts but Zakharova likes the combative nature of her work. “I say she completely believes what she says,” Galeotti added.
“The Kremlin is interested in using every human resource it has. “It’s important to be attractive, we leave morality at the door.”
