In a video released on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Vladimir Putin stressed that recruits and reservists are not being called to fight on the front line in Ukraine.
His message was intended to allay the concerns of Russian women, and the Kremlin chief sought to be sympathetic to them.
“Let me emphasize that soldiers who perform military service do not receive and will not take part in hostilities… For certain tasks only professional military are selected. I understand how much you worry about your loved ones. I appreciate the loyalty and support of women. You make the world a better place thanks to your spiritual sensitivity, compassion, and generosity“, Said Putin.
The Russian offensive in Ukraine began on February 24 at the behest of Putin, who for weeks kept Moscow troops threateningly piled up on the neighboring country’s border after receiving no assurances from NATO that it would not expand further east. However, the Russian military encountered unprecedented resistance in Ukraine, both from local soldiers and civilians. Some media outlets have reported that Russian recruits have also been sent to the war, however these claims have not been independently confirmed.
The Ukrainian military says it has killed thousands of Russian troops, but Russia’s Defense Ministry has tried to evade specific figures, citing only 500 dead recently.
