Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his administration to consider a new system to ban “toxic” content on the Internet, though details have not been released.
The new system has been described as a “self-regulatory register of toxic contents”, with the aim of “protecting young people”.
The Kremlin will analyze this system by June 1, reports the news agency, Reuters.
Thursday’s order was first reported in the Russian media on Saturday, January 29.
Putin has signaled restrictions on content, accusing the internet of youth corruption and inciting street protests by opposition opponents, some of whom authorities have declared extremists.
Russia has stepped up pressure on major tech companies last year, fining them nearly $ 100 million for failing to remove content that is considered banned in the country.
