Russian President Vladimir Putin has stepped up threats of a possible nuclear attack after warning Western countries trying to intervene in Ukraine that they would receive a lightning response from Moscow.
“If anyone intends to intervene in the ongoing events (in Ukraine) from outside and create strategic threats unacceptable to us, then they should know that our response to those shocks will be swift. Russian troops would not hesitate to use the most modern weapons. We have all the tools for this – the ones that no one can boast of. And we will not boast. We will use them if necessary. “I want everyone to know that.”
Last week, Russia announced that it had conducted a successful test of launching the Sarmat ICBM missile, nicknamed Satan 2 in the West, one of the most destructive missiles in the world.
Continuing his speech in St. Petersburg, the Russian leader said Western efforts to “economically stifle Russia” through sanctions had failed. He said the West wanted to use Ukraine as a platform to attack Russia through the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow annexed in 2014, and the separatist-held eastern Donbas region.
The allegations came hours after Russian energy giant Gazprom cut off gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria, which was widely condemned by the West, which called the action pure blackmail.
