US-born singer-songwriter Wang Leehom has been charged with adultery and emotional abuse by his wife Lee Jinglei
The successful Mandarin Chinese artist has already published a public apology to the ex-wife, as family conflict has gripped China and its disproportion.
In a long post on social media , Lee Jinglei accused Wang of emotional abuse, lack of family care, adultery and dating prostitutes.
The accusations attracted a lot of attention as Wang has a reputation as a ‘musical idol’, which in the Chinese world is associated with a virtuoso reputation for conduct in private life.
Lee further accuses Wang of transferring assets in his name, including those earned along with Lee’s work.
She says Wang used it as a “chess piece” to defend herself. “I no longer carry the cross for you,” she wrote.
Her post quickly spread online, with many users expressing frustration with Wang, while in recent days major companies have terminated advertising contracts with her, such as Japanese carmaker Infiniti or Hong Kong-based jewelry group Chow Tai Seng.
Today in a post on social networks Wang promised to “take on responsibilities as a father, as a son and as a public figure”, as well as to share the burden of raising three children with Lee.
“I was wrong in neglecting the family, and losing the public image of the idol.,” Wang wrote. “I want to apologize to the parents, Jinglei’s ex-wife and the children. “The divorce has already taken place and we can not debate the past.”
Wang’s share received 6.2 million likes and 420,000 on the Chinese social network Weibo.
Interest was also high in Taiwan where Wang had many supporters. “I believe in every word you say, I will support you forever,” one user wrote.
The new turning point in the conflict came when Wang’s father accused Lee’s ex-wife of making false accusations against his son. He said Lee had “forced” Wang to marry her when she was pregnant with their first child.
Lee responded by saying he was willing to sue Wang and his father for defamation, so he demanded a public apology from him.
