Groups of Armenian protesters stormed the government building in the country’s capital, Yerevan, calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
Pashinyan has faced growing protests, and calls from the opposition for his resignation, following a six-week conflict between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenian forces over the Nagorni-Karabakh region a year ago. Recent developments come as thousands of people took part in mass anti-government rallies, while gatherings of Pashinyan supporters were also present.
The street protests followed what the prime minister described as a coup attempt after his removal was demanded by the military. Pashinyan signed Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement, ending 44 days of fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, where Armenian forces faced territorial losses from the Azerbaijani army, backed by Ankara’s Pashinyan, whose alliance has a majority in parliament, rejected opposition demands for early elections and called for consultations.
The prime minister has been forced to relinquish control of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven districts of Azerbaijan, which have been occupied by Armenian forces since the 1990s, and the decision was strongly opposed by many Armenians.
