The recent attacks on Kosovo police in the north have been strongly condemned by both the Pristina authorities and international mechanisms.
During the last three days, several successive attacks have been recorded against the Kosovo police operating in the north of the country. According to the General Director of Kosovo Police, Samedin Mehmeti, in the first attack the police encountered metal hedgehogs on the road that serve to damage the tires of vehicles, in the second attack the officials were attacked with stones, in the third attack they heard automatic bursts, while in a fourth attack, hand grenades and AK 47 automatic weapons were also used. The police announced that there was only material damage to police vehicles, but no injuries.
Reactions after attacks
There will be no tolerance towards the Serbian parallel structures in the north of Kosovo, said the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti after the last attack on members of the Kosovo police in the north, on April 15. According to the Prime Minister, Albin Kurti belongs to the law enforcement agencies to investigate and assess the security situation. “It is the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Kosovo Police that make the analysis, studies of the causes and circumstances of these attacks on our police members. “We have strongly condemned this attack, which was a terrorist attack since the members of the police were shot with bullets and grenades, who were lucky to suffer only material damage to their vehicles”, said Kurti.
The April 15 attack, when according to law enforcement authorities in Kosovo, police officers were attacked as they were leaving to take up duty at border crossings with Serbia, was intended to kill police officers, Kurti said. “With the illegal structures of Serbia, with organized crime, there will never be a gram of tolerance from the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, the state of Kosovo, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Kosovo Police,” said the Prime Minister of Kosovo.
The attacks are condemned by the international community
The international community calls against the escalation of the situation. Attacks on the Kosovo Police have been condemned by the US Embassy in Pristina, the European Union and the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR. The KFOR peacekeeping force said they were ready to assist Kosovo police if required. “We confirm our readiness to support the Kosovo Police if needed and if required. “We expect all parties to behave responsibly and constructively and to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions unnecessarily and negatively affect Kosovo’s security and stability in the region,” a KFOR statement said.
The US Embassy in Pristina has also expressed deep concern about the current situation. A statement said: “The US Embassy is deeply concerned by reports of gunshots and stone-throwing of Kosovo law enforcement officials near Zubin Potok. “We strongly condemn this miserable, unjustifiable violence,” the response reads.
The European Union Office in Kosovo also strongly condemned the attacks on Kosovo police in the north. “Kosovo Police is the main provider of security and the use of force against officials is unacceptable.” The European Union Office has called on all parties to avoid unnecessary speculation, which could further escalate tensions in northern Kosovo./DW
