Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned today following mass protests over the government’s management of the economic crisis, officials said.
The move comes as the island was placed under a second curfew over the weekend following violent clashes between police and anti-government protesters in the capital Colombo.
Dozens of people have been injured in the capital’s violence, which began last month over rising prices and power outages.
The island nation is facing the worst economic crisis since its independence from Britain in 1948.
The 76-year-old Rajapaksa, today sent his resignation letter to his younger brother who is the president of the country Gotabaya Rajapaksa, saying that he hoped this would help resolve the crisis. But the move is not expected to please the opposition as long as his brother remains in office.
In demonstrations that began in early April, protesters set up camps outside President Rajapaksa’s office, demanding his resignation.
In the published footage, the police released tear gas and used pressure water, while there were clashes among pro-government anti-government anti-government anti-governments with sticks and strong means.
Citizens are angry at the unaffordable cost of living. The government blames the pandemic that has almost destroyed the country’s tourism industry which is one of the main sources of revenue.
But many experts blame the mismanagement of officials.
In the resignation letter the prime minister called for an emergency government of all parties but the opposition is not expected to accept as long as the president remains in office.
