Price growth reached one of the highest levels in December. Citizens are spending more every day on their everyday products, or as they are called basket products.
The first affected is bread that has gone from 80 to 90 lekë, while by-products such as pie from 30 to 40 lekë have also been affected. Then cooking oil has increased by almost 30 lek, along with rice sugar and a party with 10 eggs.
From the whole category of foods, the highest growth has been experienced by fruits and vegetables at sensitive levels ranging from 50 – 100 ALL.
Also, meat has gone up to 850 ALL / kg from 750 ALL / kg a year ago, almost 100 ALL more expensive, while the growth trend has been followed by dairy products with 10 – 50 ALL increase.
At the group of fuels used for houses, citizens are paying about 40 lek more for gas. Meanwhile, transport is one of the strongest increases, with fuel prices rising by 50 lek since the pandemic.
If a family with an average of four people spent about 83,400 ALL per month according to INSTAT in 2020, the costs have increased by a minimum of 5,000 ALL, bringing the total to 88,000 thousand ALL per month.
The average salary in Albania is about 56,400 Lekë, while if a family has two employees, then they do not exceed 112,400 Lekë, leaving them very little savings aside and putting the middle class under a strong pressure with the pandemic that still persists.
Governor Gent Sejko has said that high prices will accompany us all year round and in these conditions some indicators in the economy are deteriorating.
The first is the risk of being poor, where according to statistics 1 in 3 families with dependent children were considered at risk of poverty in 2020, while a person who needed 18,600 ALL to survive will now ‘ he needs about 2,000 lekë more, while the increase in prices devalues social assistance and assistance.
Another problem that price increases will cause is for retirees. ISSH has projected to index their pensions up to the 3% limit, but as inflation is expected to be higher than this rate, their pensions may come down this year.
