The President of the Council of Europe, Charles Michel, has stated that the focus of Kosovo’s institutions should be the process of normalizing relations with Serbia and implementing the agreements signed in the past.
“Both sides must make progress in implementing past agreements,” Michel said Wednesday at a joint conference with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani.
Kosovo and Serbia in the framework of the EU-mediated dialogue, launched in 2011, have so far reached 33 agreements, but not all have been implemented.
Regarding this, the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, said that Kosovo is committed to the dialogue process with Serbia as a constructive party.
“For Kosovo, dialogue is not just a request from the internationals but a vital process,” Osmani added.
She added that in order to achieve concrete results in the dialogue process, Serbia must also recognize the reality. As she said, Kosovo has so far not blocked the dialogue process and will not do so in the future.
Osmani and Michel also commented on the visa liberalization process for Kosovo.
Michel said that “EU member states must decide on this important issue for you”.
Kosovo since 2016 has met all the conditions for visa liberalization with the EU.
President Osmani said that visa liberalization for the people of Kosovo remains the main issue, adding that there must be active engagement in order for states to vote. According to her, so far there has been “deep discrimination and injustice.”
Reiterating the fact that Kosovo is committed to regional stability and operates on the basis of European values, Osmani said that the time has come for relations between the EU and Kosovo to be raised to a higher level.
“Despite our commitment, the non-fulfillment of promises in relation to our region tests the credibility of the EU, leaving room for external influence.”
“But we urgently need the EU to make clear the European perspective of the region and Kosovo,” Osmani added.
President Michel also stressed that next week he will meet with the leaders of the 27 EU countries, calling it an opportunity “to show unity for our common values.”
“It is very important for us to do our homework and in this meeting at the end of June we must confirm the political obligations we have towards the Balkans,” he said, among other things.
Michel has encouraged Kosovo to participate in regional forums and implement common market agendas, which, according to him, will bring the region closer together.
Michel’s visit to Kosovo is part of his visits to several countries in the region.
