Pope Francis dismissed rumors that he plans to resign soon and said he hopes to visit Kiev and Moscow in the near future.
In an interview with Reuters, Pope Francis said on July 4 that it had “never occurred to me” to plan to retire at the end of the summer, although he reiterated that he could one day step aside the way Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI did in 2013.
The pope had planned to visit Congo and South Sudan this week, but had to cancel the trip because doctors recommended he receive more therapy on an injured knee.
He said he plans to travel to Canada July 24-30 and said he hopes to visit Russia and Ukraine after that.
Following these comments, Ukraine renewed its invitation for Francis to visit Ukraine and asked the Pope to continue to pray for the Ukrainian people.
“It is time to deepen ties with those who sincerely want it,” said the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, Oleh Nikolenko.
“We renew the invitation to Pope Francis to visit our country and urge you to continue to pray for the Ukrainian people.”
