Pope Francis has recently acknowledged that the Roman Catholic Church has a persistent problem with the sexual abuse of nuns by priests and bishops, who use them as “sex slaves”.
The public acknowledgment of the problem by the high priest adds to the pressure of such scandals on the clergy, following the global crisis of child sexual abuse by its institutions.
In recent years Catholic nuns have raised their voices for sexual assaults by senior clerics in institutions on continents such as Africa, Latin America, India or Italy.
Talking to the network Associated Press during the return flight from Abu Dhabi, Pope RECEIVED that “more needs to be done” to address the crisis:
“It’s true… there are priests and even bishops who have done this. “I think this continues to happen because it can not stop just because someone denounces it,” said the Pope with his calmness that characterizes him.
It is not known how his relaxed speech could have affected the victims of abuse.
The pope added that an order of nuns had been dissolved by his predecessor, Pope Benedict, because of abuses that amounted to “sexual slavery” by senior clergy.
Pope Francis added:
“It’s a path we’ve been through before. “Pope Benedict had the courage to dismantle an order of nuns that was at a certain level, because it was a slavery of women by clergy or founders.”
A Vatican spokesman later confirmed about the network CBS News that the disbanded network of nuns in 2005 was in fact the Community of St. Jean in France.
The comments come after an article in a Vatican women’s magazine about abuses against nuns in the Catholic Church.
IN article of the Women of the Church magazine, editor-in-chief Lucetta Scaraffia wrote that nuns were forced to have abortions by priests, or to raise children whom the priests did not accept as their own.
She added that the rapists enjoyed impunity from the culture of silence that surrounded their crimes.
Scaraffia wrote:
“If we continue to turn a blind eye to this scandal – which is exacerbated by the fact that the abuse of women results in the birth of children unknown to the priests – the oppressed condition of women in the Catholic Church will not change.”
