Aides to an official of Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party reported that he died overnight in custody.
The cause of Khin Maung Latt’s death is unknown, but Reuters news agency reported that he had seen a photograph of his body with a blood-stained cloth placed around his head.
This is how new protests should have erupted in 12 cities of the country, at a time when Myanmar is already facing rallies that are considered some of the largest actions against the coup that took place last month.
Sithu Maung, a dissolved member of parliament, wrote in a Facebook post that Khin Maung Latt was his campaign manager and was arrested Saturday night in Pabedan. Police declined to comment.
On Sunday, security forces suppressed many of the protests across the country. According to the UN, security forces in Myanmar have killed more than 50 people so far.
