Hundreds of people took to the streets of the city of Rennes, in Brittany, France after the announcement of the result of the first round of the presidential election, held on Sunday.
Numerous police forces took you to the city center after demonstrations there took a violent turn. People initially only marched chanting anti-fascist and anti-capitalist slogans, but then started firing on some construction equipment in the area, prompting firefighters to intervene.
Dissatisfaction seems to have existed for both parties.
“In 5 years, Macron ruined everything. And now, it goes to the runoff. We are angry and we want to express this anger with fire, with breaking windows, whatever.Says a protester.
“We need measures that correspond to what people want, and it simply what the upper class wants that imposes that imposes its policies without argument. And playing the far right game in every election round does not work. People do not want this anymore“, says another.
Another protester said he would not vote in the second round for either Macron or Le Pen. The French president is elected for five years. He has significant influence in the country’s politics and a more important role than the prime minister, who is appointed by him.
The runoff will take place on April 24th. Macron and Le Pen also competed against each other in the second round of the 2017 presidential election. But this year the result is expected to be narrower than then.
