Colombian anti-drug police have seized a large consignment of 20,000 coconuts filled with liquid cocaine, shortly before embarking on their journey to Europe.
The capture took place in the port of Cartagena, on the Colombian shores of the Caribbean Sea, from where the coconuts were heading towards Genoa in Italy.
The Colombian prosecution and anti-drug unit checked the shipment of fruit being transported in 504 cloth bags, and found that natural coconut milk had been replaced with another juice that had been injected inside the berries.
“After the inspection it was discovered that the tropical fruit juice had been replaced with liquid cocaine,” the Colombian central prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
The fruits were sent to the laboratory for further inspections to determine the exact amount of cocaine in each coconut.
No arrests have been made so far but the prosecution said it is investigating to find out the origin of the goods and those responsible for the traffic.
Cocaine production in Colombia is reported higher than ever reaching the record in 2017 according to one rorbutyou from the UN drug agency.
Most of the cocaine coming to Europe enters from Spain and Italy, as well as from the major ports of the Netherlands and Belgium in the north.
