Two police officers were patrolling their car one day in a rural town in Colorado, USA, when they suddenly saw a small animal not moving in the middle of the gravel road.
They stopped and when they approached they saw that it was in fact an owl baby, of the species that the locals call Northern Saw-Wher.
The baby clearly had lost its mother or its nest and was standing in the middle of the road, so the officers tried to help.
The female officer approached the owl and said, “What do we have little one, how are you doing?”
After not receiving an answer she spoke to him again and this time the owl baby opened her big eyes as if to show that he was listening with all his attention.
After an initial courtesy conversation, officers stopped filming and attempted to help the little owl get out of the way.
But to their surprise both the little owl flew away in flight.
Here is the video where they recorded the conversation up close with the owl:
“A small owl with a cat-like face, big hands and bright yellow eyes, the Northern Saw-whet seems to have a lot of character. “There must be problems with hearing from asymmetrical ears,” they wrote.
“These owls hunt mainly at dusk and dawn, while most of the time they sit and wait to catch their prey from a short distance. “Maybe he is also trying to set a trap”, the officers wrote jokingly in their publication.
