Police in the US have been put on the lookout for a possible serial killer after a series of attacks on homeless people.
The hunt has begun after several victims slept on the streets of Washington and New York City leaving two dead and three injured.
Officials say the attacks were carried out by the same man.
Police in the two cities are working together to find the perpetrator of the murder of a man with a gun and a knife on Wednesday in Washington and the murder of another man in New York on Saturday.
Authorities have released video footage of the suspect, who also injured two homeless earlier this month in Washington and a third in New York.
Already the homeless are being urged to seek refuge in city centers to avoid further bloodshed.
Police Chief Robert Contee explained: “We are committed to pursuing any investigative approach to bring this investigation to a speedy conclusion and bring the perpetrator to justice.”
Officers said the victims had been attacked without provocation.
New York police commissioner Keechant Sewell said the homeless population in the city is highly exposed to attacks by predatory individuals.
Mayor Eric Adams, said an officer unit has been set up to monitor and protect the homeless on the street or subway.
“This case is a horrific premeditated murder, taking someone’s life because he is homeless.”
“Two individuals were killed sleeping on the street.”
The attacks are similar to the fatal beatings of four homeless men in the Chinatown area of New York in 2019, for whom no perpetrator has yet been found.
