Security forces in Nigeria have today rescued about 100 people held hostage for two months in forested areas in the northwest of the country.
Police said the men, women and children were taken hostage more than two months ago by criminal gangs.
Authorities said they had launched a campaign to track down armed groups known locally as “bandits” and to take people hostage in local communities.
In an operation Monday, police rescued 68 victims held in camps in Zamfara state, aided by several thugs turned informants.
In another operation, police released 29 victims held in the Kalgo forest, where they had been held for 60 days.
“All the rescued victims are receiving medical treatment from government groups and the police,” the statement said.
Criminal hostage-taking and livestock robbery gangs have frequently hit central and northwestern areas of Nigeria, but attacks have been on the rise.
Since last year, bandits have targeted schools and colleges, abducting hundreds of students to demand ransom money.
Security forces raided forest areas and cut off communications in their actions against bandits.
