A rally called today by ousted former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was greeted with tear gas by police in the eastern city of Lahore.
Khan had called for the march to continue towards the capital Islamabad but the main roads were blocked by authorities.
Since leaving power with a no-confidence vote last month, numerous protests have been staged against the new coalition, demanding new elections.
In his confrontation with rivals today, Khan urged thousands of supporters in his Peshawar stronghold to march on the capital, hoping to gather people across the cities.
“We will reach Islamabad at all costs. “We will overcome any obstacle… following the orders of our leader,” protesting shopkeeper Irfan Ahmad told AFP.
The ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has vowed to ban Khan supporters from entering the city, calling the movement a “promotion of chaos”.
Police used tear gas in Lahore when Khan supporters tried to remove roadblocks to Islamabad.
