Ankara – A mass of 1,270 square kilometers of ice broke off the Brunt ice shelf in western Antarctica, Anadolu Agency (AA) reports.
According to a news item on the Space.com website, the rupture occurred after a crack in the northern part of the ice shelf in November 2020.
The British Antarctic Research Foundation (BAS) reported that the rift that progressed by about 1 kilometer per day during January caused a mass of 1,270 square kilometers to separate from the shelf in the morning hours.
The researchers noted that the mass 20 times larger than Manhattan Island could leave the shore or save the place near the ice shelf.
Stating that rupture is part of the natural process, experts estimated that more detailed research needs to be done in order to reach conclusions about the effect of temperature changes caused by global climate change.
The Brunt ice chief, 150 meters thick, moves 2 miles west to the shores of Antarctica each year. As a result of this movement, large masses of ice are formed in the region.
