A Peruvian farmer hopes his lawsuit against German energy giant RWE will save his home in the Andes, and stop the melting of glaciers from the mining company’s emissions.
German judges and experts have already visited the Palcacocha lagoon and surrounding glaciers this week, to calculate the effects in the unprecedented case.
Plaintiff Saúl Luciano Liuia, who lives in the mountains near Huaraz, accuses RWE of causing glaciers to melt from greenhouse gas emissions.
His case was dismissed in the first instance of the German court in Essen.
But incoming experts said they would calculate the risk posed to the community in Huaraz, the northern city of 120,000, about an eight-hour drive from the capital Lima.
“We want RWE to take responsibility for environmental damage. “They have polluted the world in many countries and with this lawsuit we want to make a difference,” said the 41-year-old Peruvian.
A similar view is held by lawyer Roda Verheyen, of the environmental NGO Germanwatch, which supports the lawsuit.
RWE operates in 27 countries around the world including Chile and Brazil with power plants and mineral extraction, but it is the first time it has been deployed in Peru.
Its representative Guido Steffen told AFP that the claim “was rejected in the first instance and will be rejected on appeal”.
