Two children and an adult have died of starvation in South Sudan after the suspension of food aid by UN organizations.
It comes after the UN’s World Food Program (WFP) said it had suspended rationing programs in some parts of the country due to a lack of funds.
In June, the body said it needed $426 million (£352 million) to continue distributing food.
But that help has not come as the international community has focused on other crises, including the ongoing war in Ukraine.
According to the BBC, in the statement given by an employee at the camp, it is said that one of the victims was a five-year-old child.
“I find the mother of one of the children sitting by the small grave of her five-year-old son. Her three other children, all very thin and frail, sit at the entrance to the family’s makeshift shelter.” said employee Sami Al Subaihi.
He added that more than 20,000 people living in displacement camps were at risk of starvation.
“In a camp I see people who are exhausted. Clearly they haven’t had enough food for a while. I don’t see anyone cooking or any food stored in any of the shelters.” he further added.
This suspension spread to different regions of the country and more than 60% of the population of 11 million people now face food insecurity.
South Sudan has been wracked by violence since gaining independence in 2011 and this has contributed to food insecurity, despite the formation of a unity government in 2020.
The situation has also been worsened by four consecutive seasons of flooding that have destroyed homes and farmland, displacing thousands of people.
