Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday that Russia continues to pose a threat to Kiev, despite a relocation of forces to the outskirts of the capital and the city of Cherhiv.
Kirby says Russia may have changed its focus as a result of failing to take the capital quickly:
“We believe that this is a repositioning, not a real withdrawal of Russian troops, and that we should all be ready for a bigger offensive against other areas of Ukraine. We and no one else should deceive ourselves with the Kremlin’s recent claim that it will suddenly simply reduce attacks near Kiev. Russia is still causing massive brutality in the country“.
According to him, the repositioning forces are moving “more to the north”, but it is “too early to say” what their final destination will be.
The same opinion was expressed by President Joe Biden who said that he does not see an escalation of Russians on the ground.
