US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said today that one of the goals of military aid to Ukraine is that the United States “wants Russia to weaken” so that it can no longer do such things.
When asked what his goals are in Ukraine he He added “We want Ukraine to remain a sovereign country, capable of defending its territory. “We want to see Russia weakened to the point where it is incapable of doing things like invading Ukraine.”
Austin, along with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, made the comments in Poland after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev.
Austin added that Russia “has already lost” large military capabilities, and many of its troops.
The Pentagon chief said he wanted “them not to have the ability to reproduce quickly lost troops or military capabilities.”
Austin said the meeting with Zelensky was productive and focused on topics of war and reconstruction of the future.
